In 2017, The Museum of Science and the National Center for Technological Literacy® partnered with Alipes to design a custom e-book, with interactives and built-in teacher resources, for their Engineering is Elementary® (EiE®) classroom education kits.

Harnessing the unique advantages of ebooks, the Museum wanted interactives to demonstrate the scientific topics featured in the books. However, many school districts use low-power Chromebooks and Amazon Fire Tablets in classrooms. To build the interactives, we experimented with animated SVGs that were designed in AfterEffects and rendered with Lottie. The technique pushed the boundaries of what animated SVGs could do. But it also streamlined the development process, while delivering a high-quality educational experience within the limitations of the ARM processors commonly found in Chromebooks. In total, we produced twenty interactives designed for use in elementary classrooms.
